Pears are, to me, an apple’s curvy cousin. Their similarities to each other are in their waxy skin, their fleshy interior, the hardened stem, soft red and green colors, a seedy core, and their round shapes. I could even go one step further and say that their tastes are similar, although I believe pears to have a softer texture and a grainier taste. Their crisp flavor keeps me coming back for more, and the anticipation of having more fruit is contagious.
We slice up the pears and eat them has a healthy addition to our meals. We chop them up and add them to salads. We slide them between toasted cheesy layers of a Grilled Cheese Sandwich and enjoy the sweetness it adds to an unsuspecting bite. With two big boxes of pears delivered by Harry & David, we did all of that, and more. We had so much fruit that we decided to make some pearsauce for everyone to enjoy.
Pearsauce is like applesauce, cooked and processed the same way, but in my opinion, once you have pearsauce, you might never go back to applesauce again. The flavors are intriguing and delicate and quite captivating, spoonful after spoonful.
The pears were so perfect that I didn’t need to do any extra cutting to weed out the bad spots. Every bit of the flesh was good. After cutting out the cores (and feeding them to my happy chickens), I had a big beautiful pot of chopped pears, just waiting to be simmered down to become pearsauce.
The result was magnificent, all thanks to the huge shipment of pears that I received from Harry & David. I have a large family, and more than anything, I appreciate getting a big shipment of fresh fruit so that everyone can have their fill.
