I first became a Harry & David™ customer around 2003. The first gift I ever received was a stunning Christmas Amaryllis. It was so fun to watch it grow. Once it bloomed (a week or two after Christmas), the red flowers lit up the entire room.
My mom sent me my first Organic Fruit of the Month Club back in 2004 as a housewarming gift after I purchased a new condo. Living in a small, mountain town of 8,000+ feet elevation, it was a huge treat getting fresh fruit delivered to the door each month. I enjoyed it so much, I renewed my membership for another year.
When my son was born in 2009, the Organic Fruit of the Month Club supplied the base for homemade, organic baby food. He enjoyed an assortment of fruit and vegetable purees. He is now in pre-school and has remained a super-healthy eater. I credit part of that to luck and part of it to starting good eating habits early. The Fruit of the Month Club helped foster those good habits right from the start.
So, yes, I am a big fan of Fruit of the Month Clubs. They are more expensive than if bought it at the grocery store yourself. But that’s not really the point. They make such beautiful, thoughtful gifts (especially when paired with a deluxe gift basket). And who doesn’t like to receive a package every month? It certainly is a gift that keeps on giving. I also enjoy trying fruits I probably wouldn’t buy otherwise. Tropical / Exotic Fruit of the Month Clubs are great for that.
These are photos of the fruit I received every month from 2009 – 2010. It will give you a good idea of what to expect to receive from a Harry & David Fruit of the Month Club, as I don’t think much has changed. I did have a few instances over the years when the fruit I received was premature. I followed the instructions but it just never ripened. On those occasions, I phoned customer service and they sent a replacement shipment.
If you would like to sign up for this club or send someone a gift, visit the Harry & David website.
Update: Harry and David has a very colorful history. In 2011, Harry and David filed for bankruptcy protection (this article provides a good summary). In September of 2014, Harry and David became a wholly owned subsidiary of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. which acquired the company. Given the turbulent history of the company, you may want to check out other Monthly Fruit Clubs this season to avoid any possible confusion or delays. Golden State Fruit and The Fruit Company both offer very competitive products, with excellent customer service to back it up.
