Although we have a large family, six oranges from The Fruit Company, provided plenty of feasting opportunities over the few days following our package shipment. While the oranges were patiently waiting their turn to be savored, they rested comfortably as the centerpiece for my kitchen table. It wasn’t long, however, that their temptations became too great. Time to bake something yummy!
I decided to make some orange sour cream muffins with a zesty sweet orange glaze. The first thing to remember, whenever you are making something that calls for freshly squeezed citrus juice, is to make sure you zest the fruit before you squeeze the juice out. Even if the recipe you are following doesn’t call for the zest (which is the colored exterior of the fruit’s skin and is filled with nutrients and flavor), I plead with you to always ALWAYS add the zest! It will bring out your citrus flavor in the item you are making, and when you take that first bite, the zest is what zings the flavor of the citrus to your taste buds!
While I was juicing the oranges from The Fruit Company, I recalled the very first time I had every drank freshly squeezed orange juice. I was a young child and my family was visiting our relatives in California. My Uncle picked the oranges early that morning from the big tree that bordered his backyard fence, and I watched with fascination as he sliced open each fruit and juiced it until he had a delicious and bright pitcher of orange juice. When I drank that first glass, my taste buds were born. My Uncle changed my flavor palate forever that day. When I juiced the oranges I received from The Fruit Company, I took a quick sip before surrendering up the pulpy goodness into the muffin batter. That sip was just as magnificent as the first sip of my Uncle’s freshly squeezed orange juice. It was tart and fresh and sweet and completely bursting with flavor. Now that’s a good orange!
Soon the aroma of delicious orange muffins filled our house. The family all gathered around the oven, waiting for the timer to announce what their eyes had been feasting on already. The muffins were overflowing with orange zest; its brightly colored threads could be seen decorating the muffins inside and out. The orange juice added sweetness and color to the finished product. These muffins, intended for breakfast and made the night before, didn’t last 5 minutes. The Fruit Company makes it so easy to offer the freshest and most delicious-tasting fruit to my family.
